Code: EYFS 21/00100 A guide to observation, assessment and planning in the early years for leaders and managers

Observation, assessment and planning are key aspects of Early Years provision.

The Statutory Framework for the EYFS (2021) states that:

·         “Ongoing assessment…is an integral part of the learning and development process. It involves practitioners knowing children’s level of achievement and interests, and then shaping teaching and learning experiences for each child reflecting that knowledge. In their interactions with children, practitioners should respond to their own day-to-day observations about children’s progress and observations that parents and carers share.”

·         “Assessment plays an important part in helping parents, carers and practitioners to recognise children’s progress, understand their needs, and to plan activities and support.”

·         “Practitioners must consider the individual needs, interest, and development of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child in all of the areas of learning and development.”

This course supports leaders and managers working in the Early Years to understand the importance of the observation, assessment and planning cycle. Each component will be reviewed and discussed with time set aside to consider how the cycle could work in your setting.
