This course is delivered by a qualified speech and language therapist who will provide information about disordered speech, selective mutism and stammering and how to identify children who would benefit from intervention (Supports EYFS: Communication and Language).
The course will focus on children with disordered speech sounds and will also give an overview and some key points for staff to support children who stammer or are a reluctant talker/ selective mute.
Although these children are likely to need support from speech and language therapy, early years’ practitioners play a crucial role in helping them to thrive in their settings. The course will provide hints and tips about the best way to help.
- To support settings in the early identification of children with disordered speech, who stammer or have selective mutism and know when/how to refer to a speech and language therapist
- To enable settings to be able to give appropriate support to these children in their setting as soon as needs are identified
At the end of the session participants will:
- Have a greater understanding about disordered speech, selective mutism and stammering
- Feel confident about which children would benefit from a referral to a speech and language therapist
- Have skills to respond in a helpful way towards children with disordered speech, selective mutism or a stammer
