Course description
Introduction to Childminding (ICC) is a course approved by the Local Authority and adheres to registration requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Childcare register.  ICC covers every aspect of being a registered childminder from meeting children’s learning needs to working in partnership with parents and other professionals.

The course supports you to complete a registration process over four online sessions via Microsoft Teams.

Delegates must have attended or accessed an Information Session prior to booking onto the course, accessed via the Early Years website. In addition they must attend ‘Practitioners new to the EYFS’ and Safeguarding Training via Buckinghamshire as a part of this course.

An information pack for those wishing to become childminders explaining more about training requirements is available to download on the Early Years website.

You should attend each session and complete all tasks which supports good practice when registered and to receive an attendance certificate. Considerable support is offered throughout the course to enable you to gain maximum benefit.

Register as a childminder in Buckinghamshire.

Learning outcomes

6th October 2020. Week 1: Health and Safety (1.5 hours)
Assess & take action to ensure that the environment is safe for children of different ages and stages of development (risk assess).
Have a knowledge of safe supervision both inside and outside the home.
Maintain a clean, safe and hygienic environment, considering:- Disposal of waste, Food preparation & storage and Pets.
Manage accidents and incidents including evacuation and emergency plans.
Have policies and procedures to manage the administration and storage of medication.
 
13th October 2020. Week 2: Behaviour and Inclusio, routines of the day and settling new families. (1.5 hours)
Have an understanding of the reasons for unacceptable behaviour and strategies to manage this.
Be able to create a behaviour management policy including acceptable behaviour from visitors.
Have anti-discriminatory practice within their environment and be able to challenge prejudice appropriately.
Be aware of the effects of prejudice and stereotyping on children.
Plan routines which meet the needs of families and children of different ages and stages of development.
Be aware of the importance of working in partnership with parents, taking into account their wishes whilst meeting the requirements of legislation.
Understand Information sharing with parents and other carers.
Have a knowledge of the effects on children and families of transitions within children’s lives.
Have strategies for effective communication with parents and other professionals.

20th October 2020. Week 3: Running a home based business (1.5 hours)
Have a list of required policies and permissions.
Have a list of required permissions.
Have a knowledge of the required documentation to meet the requirements of EYFS and the Childcare Register.
Be aware of confidentiality and how to store/share information with other professionals.
Have a knowledge of which information must be shared with and obtained from parents.
Consider what you need to become a childminder.
Have strategies for negotiating a contract with parents.
Start creating a business plan including marketing strategy.
Know process for registering with FIS.
Understand basic financial accounts for HMRC purposes and how to register as a self-employed person (sole trader).
Have a list of required insurances.

3rd Noveber 2020. Week 4: Preparing for your Ofsted Registration Suitability visit (1.5 hours)
Your suitability to provide childcare & knowledge of the EYFS & how you will meet requirements.
Documentation.
Employing staff and recruitment processes.
Registration decision.
